Cross, Calvaries and small oratories

Role and location  crosse

Cross paths cross and Rogation processions, cross boundaries, cross villages and cemeteries, cross memory they punctuate the landscape of our district (about 350 in our canton)
The primary role of a cross is a place of Christianity. Crosses paths therefore primarily reflect the progress of Christianity and the presence of the Church.

Forms

In the canton of Faucogney there are Latin or Greek cross usually set on a column or on a pedestal. They often have embellishments (Hendee cross, celtic ....)

The Shrines

These are small stone monuments with a niche
At the bottom of each niche was a bas relief scenes inspired by Christian, a statue of the Virgin Mary or a saint

Cross path

Hubs have always been attention. There is indeed a symbolism of the crossroads. Do not neglect the role of indicator when the crossing is under the snow, the cross continues to indicate its position. A number of roadside crosses are also cross the path of the dead. A Faucogney the parish church of St Martin in the cemetery, the funeral procession stopped at one of the gates of the city where the cross was dead and there was reciting some prayers appropriate.

Cross Rogation and  processions

Some cross paths served as processions, including the Rogation Day now forgotten but essential in rural areas.
The Rogation days were a liturgical feast is spread over three days, from Monday to Wednesday before Ascension.

Cross limitations

Entrances and exits of villages are normally provided with a cross, but all limits, religious or secular, and could be materialized.

Cross villages and cemeteries

Each village opens and closes by crosses (at least in a Catholic). But places are Christianized, and cemeteries.

Cross bridges, peaks, springs and fountains

Every major point of the landscape is the subject of Christianity.

Memorial Cross

Recall that a large number of cross served as controls. That is the site of a brutal death, or rather a stroke of luck, the subject of an erection of the cross. In the same vein crosses include fever, reminiscent (and conjure) an outbreak or cross pilgrimage.
